url playlist procedure

1. I've tried to build a playlist from a url but nothing happens after the player "looks" for the sight. What is the procedure? Do I need to install MPlayer 1st or at all? I use SMPlayer to downLoad and play radio shows and NetFlix movies.
2. A suggestion: What I like about SMPlayer besides the ability to restart where I left off is the 10 sec, 1 minute, and 10 minute jump forward or backward like on my dvr! These get a hardy workout and would mention this on your home page, Thanks!
