blank screen

Ever since I upgraded from a several years older version of SMPlayer, whenever I open a video file my entire screen goes black, (also my screensaver choice) before the video plays in player. I have tried clean installs, including cleaning the XP registry, and several version now, including the latest with mplayer2. The problem has nothing to do either with output driver selection. I have already told the developer about this, and he has no idea, suggesting I ask here.

You say that the screensaver also turns on, is that it?

You can try to disable the screensaver options in preferences -> video, and see if that makes any difference.

You misunderstood. My XP screensaver choice is black. That would seem to have no bearing on the issue. However, I recently upgraded to 0.8.5 and a funny thing happened: until I rebooted the screen no longer went blank whenever I loaded or restarted a file. After I rebooted the blank screen recurred as before.
