I am also having this problem and the above two suggestions do not work.
I have come to rely on smplayer and prefer it to vlc and others.
I updated recently to version 14.9.0 and now have this problem with certain video files. I can play these same files fine with gnome mplayer so the problem is not cpu.
At this point, I would be happy to go back to my previous version of smplayer but alas, I cannot even do that.
I do not need innovation. I need a media player that works reliably. At this point, I would be happy to re-install the preceding version that actually worked for me.
