latest update wants to remove mplayer2

Postby kmod » Mon Jan 19, 2015 5:58 am

Hi,

My OS is Ubuntu 14.04 64 bit. There is an update for Smplayer to 14.9.0.6675-1-trusty1 from the rvm ppa today. But it wants to remove mplayer2 and install mplayer and three other packages instead (esoundcommon, libaudiofile1 and libesd0) I am wondering if this is intended or just a glitch in packaging.

Thanks for your time and effort.

mplayer2 is not developed anymore and it has been superseded by mpv. So the support for mplayer2 will be removed from smplayer, since the project is dead and now smplayer supports mpv.

Thanks for the explanation, that kind of makes sense. But it seems that Debian is going to drop mplayer because it is kind of dead too. Saw this a while ago, not sure what will eventually come out of it https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... 732159#112

I have been using mpv for quite some times and in smtube too (I use mplayer/mplayer2 only with gecko-mediaplayer for firefox media plugin) The latest Smplayer seems to work well with it,--I haven't done much test, just played a short video,-- though I am not sure if it would make sense to make mpv instead of mplayer a dependency for mplayer in apt-get install, I expect compatibility to break at some point given its rapid changes. ( I build mpv from git against latest ffmpeg and install it in $HOME, only symlink to /usr/bin, so if mpv becomes a dependency for Smplayer I may have to compile Smplayer from source)

Thanks

Hi, Not sure if I should start a new thread about this. It just occurs to me that Smplayer does not support vaapi since mplayer and mplayer2 don't. But mpv does support it on intel machines (in my intel laptop I enable the option in ~/.mpv/config) If Smplayer is moving towards using mpv as its backend I think this feature should be added.

Thanks.
