Thanks for the explanation, that kind of makes sense. But it seems that Debian is going to drop mplayer because it is kind of dead too. Saw this a while ago, not sure what will eventually come out of it
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugrepo ... 732159#112 I have been using mpv for quite some times and in smtube too (I use mplayer/mplayer2 only with gecko-mediaplayer for firefox media plugin) The latest Smplayer seems to work well with it,--I haven't done much test, just played a short video,-- though I am not sure if it would make sense to make mpv instead of mplayer a dependency for mplayer in apt-get install, I expect compatibility to break at some point given its rapid changes. ( I build mpv from git against latest ffmpeg and install it in $HOME, only symlink to /usr/bin, so if mpv becomes a dependency for Smplayer I may have to compile Smplayer from source)
