Initial volume stopped working

Since the upgrade to 17.12 the initial_volume parameter in smplayer.ini is not working for me. I do not have "remember settings" checked but new files begin playing at the previous volume. I use earphones primarily and have the initial_volume set at 20 so I don't deafen myself - then I bump it up or down from the keyboard as needed.

Is there a different setting I should use or did this parameter stop working?

I think it's necessary to turn off the option "global volume" in preferences -> general -> audio.
