SMPlayer will not launch as user but OK as root

Problems, bugs, suggestions... anything related to SMPlayer.

SMPlayer will not launch as user but OK as root

Postby JC_B » Wed May 30, 2018 1:12 am

Hello,

I am experiencing an issue then I try to open the player, it will not open the GUI, but it will show in system monitor that it is open.
From CLI as user, it will say --> This is SMPlayer v. 16.11.0 (revision 8242) running on Linux, but nothing else, but no GUI opens. If I run as root, it will open the GUI and work as expected

A bit of back story. Debian Stretch is my OS, and I removed VLC being that I was having a similar issue and installed SMplayer.

Do I have a messed up package somewhere or is it a permissions thing? I have the SMPlayer folder in my .config and I have permissions to it.

ANn direction or suggestions (such as logs to pull or things to look at) it will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I'd try to delete the ~/.config/smplayer folder, just in case there were any files which can't be written by the user.

Hello,

I renamed the smplayer to old_smplayer and launched it. It regenerated an new folder which is empty and no GUI came up.

I tailed the system log and relaunch the player
This is SMPlayer v. 16.11.0 (revision 8242) running on Linux
and this was the only related entry, no warning etc

When I launch as root, this is what I get
root@Familyroom:/home/jc# smplayer
Qt: Session management error: None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
This is SMPlayer v. 16.11.0 (revision 8242) running on Linux

But the player's GUI comes up and I can play video. After this I had a couple entries in the user .config file.....

I wish I could see a log entry that pointed to an error, but given that there is no error, I feel that something is missing.

From apt history, this is what as installed

Commandline: apt-get install smplayer
Install: smplayer-l10n:amd64 (16.11.0~ds0-1+deb9u1, automatic), smplayer:amd64 (16.11.0~ds0-1+deb9u1), smplayer-themes:amd64 (1:16.8.0-1, automatic), libqt5script5:amd64 (5.7.1~20161021+dfsg-2, automatic)
End-Date: 2018-05-29 17:42:38

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

I don't know what is going on, but anyway that version is very old. Could you test if you have the same problem with the latest one?
There packages for debian here:
https://software.opensuse.org/download. ... e=smplayer
