No video using DirectX / Direct3D output

Run dxdiag (press the Win key and R together, type 'dxdiag' as the command). Under the Display, see if any DirectX Features are disabled.

Only other thing I can think of is the video card driver or if other players that can use DirectX work or not. Try VLC ( http://videolan.org )
