kubuntu 12.04 smplayer crash

Had a similar problem after updating from 10.04 to 12.04. At first Smplayer worked, then started crashing on start-up irregularly, then would always crash. Completely removing and re-installing smplayer, then mplayer, didn't work. Finally I removed mplayer (which automatically removed smplayer), and re-installed smplayer, letting it choose its dependencies. It did not install the mplayer package, rather it installed the mplayer2 package, after which it worked correctly (so far). So the problem seems to be that Smplayer now uses mplayer2, but doesn't check properly which version is installed (the executable is still listed as mplayer in the Smplayer settings).
