0.8.4. avi files crash

I'm using

XP
the 32 bit version of smplayer

Some of my avi files start "trembling" and blurring and start lagging until they are unrecognizable
I used to have 0.6.9. before and it played the same files just fine
mplayer is up to date
also VLC Player, plays them fine

I saw similar problems when the option "draw video using slices" is enabled. So check that option in preferences -> general -> video.
