Audio muting questions

Postby newuser101 » Fri Nov 13, 2015 8:25 pm

rvm:

Two things:

(1) if I mute a video, the sound is off until the video finishes, but when the next video starts, the mute goes off automatically and the sound is on. Sometimes I want the muting to remain in effect until I decide to unmute, even over several videos. Any way to do this?

(2) if a video is paused or even stopped, and then a new video is started or the player is closed, there is a very brief burst of sound from the video (quarter of a second or less). This happens even if the video was muted, too. Any way to prevent this? It's as if the video starts to play again just for an instant.

Thanks!

P.S. Still hoping for that playlist behavior modification! (heh)

Thanks for the response, rvm.

(1) I do have the Global Volume option checked, but the mute still only works for one video; when the next video starts, the sound comes back on, mute is off.

---Added slight correction: I went back and checked again. What seems to be happening is this: I mute a video; then I go to the next video and there is that brief sound burst before the mute takes effect. So on the second video, the sound is still muted, BUT the volume icon changes from the red X to green sound waves. Not sure why it does this. So, weirdly, the sound is muted, but the icon shows that it is not. Then, when I go to the next video, the mute is off (without my having clicked to turn it off) and sound returns.

(2) I'm using the Mplayer version of SMPlayer, so I guess I'm out of luck on the brief sound burst problem.

(3) Great news to hear that the playlist behavior modification is in the pipeline! Thanks much for that!

I used several different video players with varying results for quite a while; now I just use SMPlayer and am very happy with it. You're doing excellent work with this program!

Thanks!

I can't reproduce the issue with smplayer r7231 (with mpv). I suggest you to try the development version. If you use Windows you can find packages here:
https://sourceforge.net/projects/smplay ... /Unstable/

The installer offers the possibility to install mpv.

Okay, rvm, I got r7231 and installed it first with Mplayer. The weird muting behavior was still there. So then I installed it with MPV and that behavior is gone. The mute function works as it ought to. Excellent. Also, I note that the playlist modification behavior is implemented in the MPV version, too. Even better!

I'm wondering if there is any downside to the MPV version as against the Mplayer version...I'll be on the lookout for differences.

Thanks, again!

At the bottom of this page I added the problems I found when adapting smplayer for mpv, maybe the most important is that DVD menus won't work with mpv:
http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/mpv.php

On the other hand mpv has some features not available in mplayer, like the possibility to display two subtitles at once. It seems to have better support for some formats like (mplayer plays this format with very frequent freezes). mpv also supports Youtube live streams (mplayer plays only a few seconds and then stops)

I'm mostly okay with the MPV version of SMPlayer so far, but I have noticed a difference in its screenshot behavior. Now when I take a screenshot, the video pauses and then the audio stutters. For example, suppose somebody is saying the word "now" when I take the screenshot. Then the video pauses on that word, but the audio says "now now now now now" (about 5 times)...then the video continues. This is kind of annoying, and the Mplayer version of SMPlayer did not do this--the screenshots were absolutely seamless. Do you see this sort of behavior with MPV SMPlayer, too?

Oh, one other thing: occasionally the MPV Thumbnail Generator takes much, much longer to complete than the Mplayer generator. It doesn't happen every time...just now and then.

Changed the audio driver from dsound to wasapi and the audio stuttering disappeared...good fix, rvm! Yes, there is still a slight pause in the video, but that's not so bad. It was the audio stuttering that was annoying.

As for the thumbnails being generated more slowly with MPV, at least I wasn't imagining things! (heh)

Thanks!

I've just made a small change (r7243) and I think now mpv is a little bit faster extracting the pictures for the thumbnails. However with this change mplayer is even faster than before.
