Could you try this?

I attach a file, copy the file test_keys.exe in the smplayer folder (32-bit) and run it. Click the button "enable hook code". Now it will display the key codes of the keys you press. Press the play/pause key and let me know if it displays a key code for it.

As of 16.4.0(7902) play pause button does not work as the icon of the play status changes but the song/video doesn't actually play or pause(Happens both when in Foreground and Background). Just making sure it's known since the thread as been quiet for quite some time now.

Please use test_keys.exe as explained in the and tell me which key code is displayed when you press play/pause.

When I press the Play/Pause button it gives "Keycode 179".

The keycode 179 is already grabbed by the global shortcut code. Be sure the key "Media Play" is assigned to the Play/Pause function in preferences -> keyboard and mouse.

If it still doesn't work, please send the smplayer log after trying to use the play/pause button.

I took the liberty to take a look at it and as you'll see the shortcut Play/Pause is caught but it doesn't actually play nor stop the player and, instead, just change the Play/Pause icon accordingly.

The good news is that the key is detected by SMPlayer. After that it seems it can't find the action to call.
Is the "Media Play" key assigned to the Play/Pause function in preferences -> keyboard and mouse?
