Shortcut to toggle deinterlacing?

Is there some simple way to pass D (step_property deinterlace) into mplayer? I can't seem to find a shortcut for that in the options anywhere or am I just blind?
I tried quickly glancing at the code to see if I could easily just copy paste it in somehow but I couldn't exactly figure out how smplayer passes things to mplayer to begin with. So before I get deeper into it I'd just like to know if I'm wasting my time and there's already a way to do it?
I'm using VDPAU so the deinterlacing video filters don't exactly work and changing the video output string every time is behind too many mouse clicks. Just being able to hit shift-d would be much less grief.
