Is it possible to tell SMP to play next video/music in the directory by default? The only way seems to add the directory to a playlist, is it possible to tell SMP to just look for the next video/music file in the current directory after finishing playing the current one?

It's only possible using the playlist, but there's an option in preferences to automatically add the videos from the folder to the playlist.

It seems to me that you have to select also at the same time the directory, otherwise it won't work, I have many folders for media files, it would be a very nice feature if the app can just pick up the next video/music file in the directory automatically without the need for us to add it to the playlist.

Preferences -> Playlist, check "add files to the playlist automatically", select "video and audio files".
Open a video, the rest of videos in the folder are added to the playlist.
