Unsynchronized audio and video, screen disappears

The audio and video streams need to be synchronized with each other, so that you don't hear people before they have opened their mouth. Usually, SMPlayer works perfectly.
But with some videos, the synchronization is off by a sizeable fraction of a second when the video is first played.
The workaround is to click the stop button, then the run button, then (because the video screen has disappeared entirely and only the audio is heard) the fullscreen button.
I would deeply appreciate it if these bugs could please be fixed. I can supply SMPlayer develpers with videos that fail in this way.
Version: 18.6.0 (revision 9075) (32-bit)

Try enabling the option "frame drop" in preferences -> performance.

This seems to have solved the first problem. My suggestion would be to enable "frame dropping" by default, so others don't have to post this question.
The second problem still happens. For example, if I am playing a video full screen and press Esc, the video frame disappears and I am left with only the toolbar, even though the video and audio are still playing.

Would a screenshot help? Is there a way I can export a compact list of all my preferences? The problem has been replicated here dozens of times over the past few years. I love SMPlayer and find it better than VLC, but SMPlayer does have a few weird bugs that I've noticed when running it under Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. There must be something different in my environment, since otherwise the developers of SMPlayer would have seen the weird behavior and fixed it many months ago.

The Esc key by default turns off fullscreen mode. I've just tested it on Windows 10 and it works fine for me.
What "multimedia engine" and "video output" (preferences, general) are you using?

multimedia engine: mplayer
video > output driver: Default
Pressing Esc causes the screen to disappear and just the toolbar to appear at the top of the screen. After that, clicking the fullScreen button causes a fullscreen black background on top of which is a regular-size video window at the top left.

Does it still happen if you select a different video output?

I found that the various bugs in display happen somewhat randomly. I could not reproduce that last problem, for some reason, but I did get the following interesting incorrect display:
www.springtimesoftware.com/temp01.png (note: this forum seems to be missing any way to attach a screenshot). Without being able to reliably reproduce a problem, there is no point in my experimenting with options.
