Lower left corner lag

I am posting because I am having a small screen lag problem in smplayer. It lags in the lower left corner of the screen, a small maybe 150 x 20 pixel bar. This only started happening after I installed smplayer and has affected my other players as well. Whenever I switch to say, gl2 or gl2 (yuv) the problem goes away, but I read in the faq the xv is the best quality video setting.
Some other information: This only occurs in Linux. On my Windows platform, it doesn't happen, since I use MPC-HC on there.
