Washed out colors with direct3d output driver (default)

Windows 10 18363.1082
SMPlayer 20.6.0 (revision 9418) (64-bit)
Multimedia engine: both mpv and mplayer
My monitor (HDMI / SDR) and nvidia driver (452.06) are set to full range (0-255)
When the output driver is set to "direct3d", which is apparently the default on windows, the colors are washed out. It seems the player is selecting the wrong color output range.
When using "gpu" for mpv, and "directx" or "gl" for mplayer, the colors are fine. The problem appears with direct3d with both engines. I tested the video with the Movies & TV and also MPC-HC player and they show it fine.
EDIT: Is there an option to set the output range? I couldn't find it in settings.
