Is smplayer stable for you?

Postby kesanmits48 » Tue Nov 10, 2020 3:11 pm

I have been recently experiencing a lot of kernel panics on an arch-linux based system. After a lot of investigations of the possible reasons smplayer is the best candidate to why I was having these panics. The symptoms were sudden increase of processor/gpu fans and then maximum swap usage (up to 8GB) and then complete hang of the system, forced to hard reset.

Just thought of asking if anyone else had these problems.

System never hanged when I removed smplayer.

Hi kesanmits48,

I'm using smplayer (latest version) on both Linux Mint 20 and Debian (tracking testing). I have had none of the issues you describe. I have heard of issues between kernel 5.9.1 and Nvidia drivers. Apparently you need Nvidia driver 450.80.02 to work well with that kernel. I don't know what Arch is using so this is just a shot in the dark.

Hope this helps.
