Seek function not working properly

Whenever I try to use the seek function to go to a certain point, it always goes to what seems to be chapters. Like I can try to go to 11:31 in a video, and it takes me to 5:52. Is there a way to fix this?

don't make us guess, so give at least the info:

- what video / audio file you are playing
- gives us the mplayer log when you do the jump
- what version of mplayer are you using
