I have exactly the same problem with japanese kanji in filenames. SMPlayer just won't open them, it scans Windows fonts for a while and then does nothing. I haven't changed anything in my system since the update, using Win7 Ultimate 64bit. I have to rename the files using latin alphabet and then everything works. A really spicy fact is that Windows Media Player 11 has no problems with japanese file names and will play the files 0.6.9 (SVN r3447) SMPlayer cannot... Previous versions had absolutely no issues with either kanji filenames or long filenames.

Goto Options > Preferences > Advanced, and enable "Pass short filenames to MPlayer"

So, what? make filenames shorter OR do rename it OR remove spaces / characters via any good program. SOLVED!
