You can change the amount of cache or mount the SMB share locally. That way SMPlayer will not attempt to cache the entire file.

I updated smplayer today in Opensuse to 0.69 (packman compiled)
I was extremely disappointed to find that it also updated (overwrote) the files smplayer.desktop & smplayer.enqueue.desktop in
/usr/share/applications
and that the annoying bug I have noted here has still not been addressed.
The end result was that I could not view media files on my NAS drive until manually adding the line categories=qt;KDE to these files.
This is an annoying bug that really does need some urgent attention to allow smplayer to function correctly in KDE 4.5 +

ummmm . . . .I'm a little astounded that nothing has happened about this annoying bug yet.
Updated SMPlayer tonight and again I can't play remote files on a KDE system.
Have to jump through the hoops detailed above to get remote files playable

updated to 0.70 today.
This extremely annoying fault has obviously still not had any attention as had to go through and manually edit files to be able to play remote media files again.
