Is there any way of getting smplayer to display visualization when playing audio files?
With libvisual or something?

No. You should ask for this to the mplayer developers.

Hope you don't mind me bumping an old thread, but mplayer does support the jack backend, which can be choosen from the preferences (though you'd have to setup jack first). You can then use music visualization software, like mplayer, that support it.
I kind of paraphrased the whole process, but any help needed should be easy to find on the internet. Here's what you really need to know.
For ubuntu, and probably some other unix os's, the packages you need are called: qjackctl, projectm-jack
You need to start jack, with qjackctl or otherwise, before playing music
You need to connect mplayer to projectm using qjackctl before the visualizations will work.
