I used to use smplayer but after upgrading from Ubuntu 9.04 to 10.04 picture became transparent and invisible, so I went ahead and tried reinstalling smplayer.
However, it just crashes whenever I try to run any movie.
I can play the same files with VLC or naked mplayer without any problems.
There is more details on this page:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php? ... 81&page=27but noone there was able to help me.

Things you can try:
* select another video output in preferences -> general -> video
* disable the 3D effects in the desktop

Tried both. Makes no difference.

So copy the mplayer log after trying to play a file (options -> view logs).

It seems something went wrong in your upgrade to 10.04. Now xv and vdpau are not working on your system. I guess x11 will work, although that's the slowest video output.

1. VDPAU never worked. I just tried it now with suggestions from someone at ubuntu forums.
2. XV works just fine in VLC
3. X11 works in SMPlayer BUT:
a- it is much slower than in VLC
b- in full screen, top and bottom bar that should be black, is invisible and desktop shows
