Trouble playing HD video smoothly with in sync audio

Hi,

I'm having some trouble playing back HD files "correctly". Either I can play them back smoothly with out of sync audio, or I can play them back choppy because of dropped frames with in sync audio (presumably in sync audio but it's too hard to tell because it's choppy).

If I want smooth playback I have to deselect "allow frame drop" and "allow hard frame drop". The longer the video plays the more out of sync the audio becomes.
For in sync audio I need to select at least "allow frame drop" but the frame rate isn't good enough to be watchable. Enabling "allow hard frame drop" only makes the frame rate drop more, as expected. I guess I'm keeping the audio in sync though.

My hardware should be able to handle 1080 HD videos with no problem though. :| My processor is an AMD 965 Black Edition (3.4 ghz quad-core), I have 4 GB of DDR3 1600 RAM, and a Radeon 5850 Black Edition (minor factory overclock) graphics card. I have 6x post processing enabled, double buffering enabled, 99999 KB local cache (97 MB) set, and rendering with direct3d. Disabling the post processing and changing from direct3d to directx (fast) has no effect though.

Any ideas on why I can't achieve both smooth playback and synced audio? :(

Try a multi-threaded MPlayer build. has one. In the screen after the license agreement choose "Change settings" (and make sure the install options you want are correct since it wont remember some settings from the 0.6.9 release) and you can choose an multi-threaded AMD build.

Then you need to increase the # of threads in the options. "Threads for decoding" under Performance. 2 ought to be fine.

Sorry, I forgot to mention I have threading set to 4 threads (I already have 0.6.9.3566 because the current stable release crashed on me every time I loaded it). Even if I bump it up to 8 it doesn't seem to help.

Try r31170 or another older build. http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayer ... z/download

Extract it somewhere and in the smplayer settings point it to where you extracted it.

That seems to work a better. It seems to stay in sync now.

Thanks. Hopefully the next release will keep the audio in sync too.

I sort of have an issue with r31372, higher bitrate videos don't start very smoothly and I have to go to the beginning of the video (using left arrow) and it will play fine afterwards.

I'm inclined to still include r31372 if anybody cares about WebM support.
