Try another video output in preferences -> general -> video.

I tried change output type and nothin is a help for my.
I install mplayer 1.0rc4 (too old version) and avi files again play good, but VOB files play with bugy.

If you say mplayer plays fine, I would suggest you try and use the mplayer command that is passed through smplayer and find out which switch is the faulty one from an X terminal.

You can try starting with the whole command and start deleting switches or the other way around.

Also you cand check what's mplayer default video output driver and use that one.
