2 sec video playback

Postby Johnnyeff » Fri Dec 16, 2011 4:57 pm

Hello,

there is a thing that startled me, on number of recent videos that are up on the web:

They play only first 2 seconds, and then they stop.
Despite the fact, that the file Is about 700 Mb so that it Should have the entire movie
in it.

Those movies are always *.avi, and even shows the same 2 secs i guess..

With SMPlayer i can do Video > Preview, that Does encompass the whole 1:30:05,
but every single frame is black.

So i assume, that the SMPlayer Knows it should be a long movie, but is stuck somehow.

Anybody else who got this problem?
How to solve it folx?

looks like a damaged avi, though the file is 700Mb.

did you try using "rebuild index if needed from advanced"?

does it play in another player, e.g. vlc (vlc will ask you to repair it if damaged)?

Cheers.

Some other info and tools: http://606u.dir.bg/avicheck/

PS
your mplayer is quite old, get the newest version from here: http://oss.netfarm.it/mplayer-win32.php

Hello,

it appears that allmighty rvm banned me from this forum..
for reason of "spam"
Thank you mate! I love you too.

option Rebuild index ... i didnt know it existed..
though I have been given such choice when trying VLC player,
but it didnt do a thing ... completely failed..

P.s my Mplayer does Not exist! The was generated using SMPlayer
Version: 0.6.9 (SVN r3447) (Portable Edition)
Using Qt 4.5.1 (compiled with Qt 4.5.1)

Using MPlayer SVN r30369

.. which i thought was the latest portable version up there.

If it is true, that the Mplayer engine inside it is old,
then good luck to it :)

Posted using php proxy..

I am sorry rvm, for some time after i posted the posts here,

your site told me i have been banned, with a reason "spam"
but now i am here without a problem, so it could have been
a temporary error of some kind..

It appears that it was, and i am deeply sorry.

About VLC: it did ask me about fixing the file, which i approved,
but it still played about 2 secs, so .. "it didnt do a thing ... completely failed.."
---
commentary: i am a freelance specialist, i keep a lot on the move,
so i use VLC portable, which i can take with me on a flash drive.
The error could have been, that the fixing part of a portable VLC
was not fully functional, it is a
4.2.1 -sjlj (mingw32-2) version, also dl´ed from portableapps

about the versions,
i think its fairly obvious that a development of some portable app
takes time, so the actual engine of that player really could have been
a year old or whatever.
I havent given up per se, the " .. good luck to it" comment was about
.. say quality of sw on portable apps or something to that end..

You know what?
I think it´d be a best solution to let u have the raw data, u can see for yourselves..
The file in question is:
http://alturl.com/gk7hz .. it´s hosted on WUpload ..

Since i the time i posted this i found out it´s a hoax, the movie Isn´t what the name
suggest, it is some recent television film, but nontheless it failed to play
on The KMPlayer, VLC player portable, Mplayer portable, SMPlayer portable
and several others, till i finally managed to open it through Winamp for some reason,
and found out that it was a different movie...

There, how about it? :)

It plays with the lavf demuxer, with a lot of errors, but it doesn't stop at 2 secs.

Yeah, lavf demuxer is working even with such bad files.

Xmedia Recode cand be also used I think. Avidemux will most likely fail if re-coding is an option.

To Johnny: well, for some portable apps like smplayer here, you do no not need actually to wait till the guys build a new version but rather learn how to use it and do it yourself: I mean it's not rocket science to learn how smplayer and mplayer work together and check from time to time Sherpya's website for a new mplayer build. :)

To use it, just download, un-archive it with 7-zip and instruct smplayer to use it by using a relative path (NOT absolute): e.g. if you put the new mplayer build in App\smplayer\new-mplayer-folder, you have to put as the path: new-mplayer-folder\mplayer.exe

I'd recommend the rtm version since that will work on all the architectures.

PS
KMplayer is now already old and not so well maintained so I would recommend PotPlayer which follows the current trend. Most likely PotPlayer will be able to open the faulty file.
