subtitles not working

I have tried every video from all different sources available and it just keeps on connecting. I'm using the latest version (version 8.0) and the problem is still there. I know the subs are there in the opensubtitles website, but for some reasons they don't show up here in smplayer. It is stuck in 'connecting to...' for ever. I use this feature alot, I would really appreciate some feedback, or I guess would just go back to using some other player.
