I have installed packages available in synaptics, and the recommended update from SMPlayer backport. I am trying to make SMTube work, but I cannot find anything called SMTube anywhere in the menu.

After package install I ran the commands suggested for Ubuntu
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:rvm/smplayer
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install smplayer smtube smplayer-themes

I have these packages showing in package manager:
smplayer 0.8.0-1
smplayer-themes 1:20120919-1-Quantal
smplayer-translations 0.8.0-1

How do make SMPlayer work with youtube?

It seems it didn't install the latest packages.

You can get them manually here:

That would be the reason for not installing then, there is no package for my build of Ubuntu. I have the powerpc iso, for an iBook G4. Would it work if I managed to compile the package locally on my laptop? I mean, it would at least be the right way to go about it?

Yes, you can try to compile it.

Instructions in the file Install.txt.
