Audio Eq. boost reduces volume

When I boost any of the audio eq settings above "0" the volume level immediately drops by about 10dB. It happens with ANY video, and as far as I can recall has ALWAYS happened. I'm using 'dsound' with Win32, but have tried the other drivers with equal results. Is there a way this could be fixed?

Am I the only one with this problem?

it's most likely compensating for the gain that the eq adds. If it didn't,you would get digital clipping which not only sounds bad,but can damage your speakers/sound equipment.
