Also my video card is an ATI 5770 and my CPU is an AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition, which settings should I change from default? Installed SMPlayer 0.8.5 with MPlayer2 from .

Try disabling the volume control by software in preferences -> general -> audio.

You can also try to change the audio driver from dsound to win32. At least in my case it has a louder sound.
