I have scanned the functions of SMPlayer 8.6 new version and cannot find the command
to display subtitles in the black area of the player window. Is there a control key combination to do this?
Also 8.6 gave or saved a full screen edition that I cannot restore to the original with menus preferences and so on. "Restore" seems greyed out.

Re: compact mode, I think I loaded a skin rather than compact.
Is control+c the way out for that too?
If add black borders gets the subs off the screen area and more like subs from the source itself (they do that with quality transaltions) it will be a treat and keep me using SMPlayer for these media.

These replies have worked well.
Putting a black border only works when a video is loaded and (I assume) when external subs such as srt are used. And it makes the picture that much smaller by doing so.
And I was at a loss before knowing a simple control+c command even though I had read through a feature list for SMPlayer in the past. I forget totally what the list covered but the program says that 'normalization' is a default audio mode. This is handy.
The one question I have is: why isn't the black border option given under subtitles and with a better description? This is likely a highly in demand feature.
