I certainly think that the massive amount of work that goes into Smplayer development, deserves donations. So I fully support the idea of having a "Donate" button in the Smplayer help menu and on Smplayer's website.
However, in version 0.8.6 of Smplayer, (installed on Kubuntu) I noticed a donation popup, that appeared a couple days after I had installed the software. This kind of popup reminds me of the screens I often find within shareware and freeware software on Windows. But within open source software, I found the donation popup to be surprising.
I checked the Smplayer settings for a "Disable Donation Popup" option, but I couldn't find any option that allowed that.
So my questions are:
1.) Is there any way to disable the Smplayer donation popup? (within the GUI or inside a configuration file)
2.) Would donating money to the Smplayer project permanently remove the donation popup? Or, will the donation popup appear even after money has been donated?
3.) Has RVM ever explained why he decided to add the donation popup? Does RVM plan to keep that donation popup in all future versions of Smplayer?
Update:
After publishing this post, I wanted to create a screenshot of Smplayer's donation popup, but (quite ironically) the donation popup is no longer appearing. I tried resetting my Smplayer settings to default, by deleting my Smplayer configuration files. But I still didn't see a donation popup.
So my two new questions for RVM are:
4.) Does the Smplayer donation popup only appear once per installation?
5.) Is there no popup at all? Since it's possible, that I unintentionally clicked "Donate" in the help menu or mistakenly used a keyboard shortcut.
