Hello. I have recently upgrades my computer from ubuntu 10.10 to ubuntu 13.04. With the new system, the osd is extremly small. When you change the volume, the bright, or you move across the video, it's impossible to read the osd information.
I am using the repository version of the smplayer with gl(fast) driver. I have checked al the menus and preferences and I have found nothing about it. I have serched in google, and there are another users with the same problem, but without the solution.
Can you help me? Thanks!

What version of mplayer do you have installed?

mplayer2 --> 2.0-554-gf63dbad-1ubuntu1
smplayer --> 0.8.3-1
both are the standard version in repositories from ubuntu 13.04.

It may be a bug of that version of mplayer2, I'm using mplayer2 661a350 and I can't see that problem with the subtitles.
There are options in the subtitle menu to change the size of the subtitles, don't they work?

No, the problem is not in the subtitles. It's in the osd info. When you change the volume, or when you advance in the video. It's the info that is printed on the screen.
I tried to change the subtitles preferences, but it doesn't affect to the osd info printed on screen.

I give up. I've tried all but theres not solution. I've erased the configuration files, but it doesn't changes anything. Same problem in my both computers (desktop and laptop), each one with differrent graphics card. It is not usable if I can't read onscreen info. I have uninstalled SMPlayer and installed VLC. I hope SMplayer can solve its problems in the future.

Did you try to use mplayer instead of mplayer2?
Edit: I've just tested the ubuntu 13.04 live cd and I confirm that mplayer doesn't have this OSD problem.

The problem can be fixed with mplayer2 by adding this line to ~/.mplayer/config:
subfont-osd-scale=20
Anyway mplayer2 in raring has a big bug, it doesn't close itself at the end of a video, that causes other problems in smplayer. I wouldn't recommend to use mplayer2 with smplayer in ubuntu 13.04.

After reading your answer, I reinstalled smplayer and tried changing the config file. It works!!! in my desktop computer and in my laptop. Thank you for the solution.
If I use mplayer2 is because smplayer depends on mplayer2. When I installed smplayer, synaptic installed mplayer2 as a dependency link, not mplayer. In fact, mplayer is not compatible with mplayer2. If I try to install mplayer, it uninstalls mplayer2.
Thank you again for solving the problem.

I know ubuntu doesn't allow to install mplayer and mplayer2 at the same time, but smplayer can work with both of them.
