Hi,

Thank you for this great player. Just a feature request.
There are mostly three character encodings used for Greek subtitles, UTF-8 and ISO-8859-7 and CP 1253.
There exist tools (like file -i command in linux) that detect the character encoding of a text file.
I was wondering if you could enhance smplayer so that it auto detects the encodings of the subtitles.

There's already an option to autodetect the encoding:

Preferences -> Subtitles -> Try to autodetect for this language.

Thank you for your answer, but this does not work for me at least for the Greek language.

google came up with some workarounds that might be useful

At least smplayer could try to verify if the subs file is encoded in UTF-8.
If it can't verify UTF-8 encoding then smplayer could automaticly fall back to the default character encoding.
