You can try one of these, it has a newer mplayer: http://sourceforge.net/projects/smplaye ... -unstable/

Running mplayer directly changes the desktop to "Basic" because it uses the directx video driver by default.

I'll try one of those.

BTW: this may already be common knowledge, but my anti-virus (Sophos) detects the SourceForge downloader/installer as spyware, probably because of the nuisanceware applications it wants permission to install.

While I understand the desire for funding to support SiurceForge projects, I think that transporting spyware in SourceForge installers will eventually kill off SourceForge as a viable open source collaborative platform.
