Do you have compiz (or 3D effects) enabled? That can cause strange things in smplayer.
About the lag when seeking, this usually can be caused by a large cache (sometimes setting it to 0 makes it to work much faster) or if you use precise seek.

I don't know what is causing the lag to you but in my computer and all other computers where I tested switching to fullscreen and back is almost instantaneous. And seek is also very fast. I've just recorded a video that shows it:

Thank you for reply. It seems there's nothing I can do about it. I was tring to use VLC, but it can't show OSD (time etc.) nor remember play time position ( with extension? ), so I turned back to smplayer.

Now, in the latest version in the svn, if using mpv the option to add black borders is set using a slave command instead of restarting the process, so it's much faster.
This works only with mpv because (as far as I know) mplayer doesn't have a slave command to change the video filters at runtime.
