I can't reproduce the problem.
Can you send the smplayer log? (options -> view logs)

The problem seems to happen when using mpv 0.9.2. I think it's fixed now (svn r6966).

I can't get it to work

Switched back to Mplayer as the default player for SMPlayer and thumbnails work; think I'll stick with it for now.
