new codec h265 not working yet.

Maybe you need to update mplayer. It works here.

I have the same issue with the latest smplayer. I am using Linux Mint KDE and strangely the sofware reposit has mplayer2 instead. I do not see hevc either. I check Synaptic and it has mplayer. I don't know the differences between 1 and 2, which one is more recent ? Does smplayer use mplayer2 ?

Btw Smplayer for windows play them just fine.

mplayer2 was a fork of mplayer with new features but now it's not developed anymore, it has been superseded by mpv.
I suggest to use either mplayer or mpv.

Thank you very much. I got some help from the Linux Mint forum on how to install the 265 libs. You are right mplayer2 does not support 265 but the latest mplayer and mpv does. I found the engine selector in smplayer options too.

How did you manage to make the h265 codec to work under mplayer? I uninstalled mplayer2, installed mplayer 2:1.1. Installed the 265 codecs: gstreamer0.10-libde265 and gstreamer1.0-libde265.
Also installed the one for vlc: vlc-plugin-libde265
Mpv opens the h265 files (also vlc and totem after installing the codecs), but mplayer does not. Any idea why?
I am using Mint 17.3 (Ubuntu 14.04) , Smplayer 16.4
EDIT: besides the usage of the cpu while trying to open h.265 files with mplayer goes pretty high (around 80%) and I only can hear the sound, while with mpv it remains low and stable.
Also tried to play with mplayer through terminal with same result but the usage of the cpu is lower
