No audio from SMPlayer

Postby quaquaraqua » Thu Jul 30, 2015 11:16 pm

Hi,

since a while now SMPlayer does not emit any sound, while I don't have any issue with other programs such as VLC, even on the same video files. I am using SMPlayer 14.9.0-r1 on Gentoo/Linux. This is its output when opening a video file, enabling the debug flag: http://pastebin.com/vvms8auF

I am not sure what information to provide, could you give me any suggestion to narrow down the cause of this issue?

Thanks,
Quaquaraqua.

Try to use another audio output instead of alsa (preferences -> general -> audio).

Hi rvm,

thank you for your reply! I switched the driver from Alsa Xonar 2.1 to ALSA and set the channels 2. Now it seems it's working.

Thanks,

SMplayer 14.9.0.6371 (provided in a package with an outdated smtube for Puppy Linux Tahr 6.0.3) with ALSA (I have nothing to switch it to) has sound the first time I use it, then if I stop the video and start it again or switch videos there is no longer sound. Restarting smplayer or smtube has no effect on this loss of sound.

Mplayer (moved to the top of the list in smtube settings) sound works every time. And does not need /usr/local/ssl/cacert.pem.

If I delete /root/.config/smplayer/smplayer.ini sound works again, once, in smplayer.

Would a more recent smplayer version fix this and if so is there a binary in .tar.gz format?

I am using older versions of some libraries (qt 4-4.8.0 and icu 42). Do I need newer versions?

Could you send the mplayer log when there's no sound?

I don't know where the mplayer log is but I can read in the rxvt, when I view a video the second time with mplayer alone (the problem is not just with smplayer).
OSS: Can't open audio device /dev/dsp: Device or resource busy.
ALSA: open /dev/snd/pcm<<C0D0p failed: Device or resource busy .....
and more ..... unable to open slave.

Puppy Linux 5, using ALSA sound not OSS.

Most of the time mplayer does work with sound on this Thinkpad T23 or the DELL 8100.
I am okay with mplayer as the video player, but am curious why smplayer loses sound on the 8100.

On the T23, if I set SMtube to use SMplayer instead of mplayer, and start SMtube and choose a video, SMplayer loads the video to cache but will not play.

If I start with SMplayer instead of SMtube, it says SMtube is not installed. I must have goofed somewhere.

Sound works with smplayer on the Thinkpad T23, every time. (I was missing some libs).
Should I post anything from smplayer.ini from the Dell 8100. where I lose sound until I delete smplayer.ini?

I confirmed no sound with smplayer (CLI without smtube) on the DELL Inspiron 8100, once an smplayer.ini is created. If I delete it I get sound again.

Mplayer has problems with the video on this laptop 360p or 480p webm - highly pixelated and if I quit Q or Ctrl-C I get a screen full of black and white horizontal stripes. Same for smplayer 360p mp4. Is this related to the sound problem? 360p or 480p mp4 mplayer works well, with sound.

Is there some way to prevent smplayer from creating smplayer.ini?

The DELL is set to 1600x1200 and the Thinkpad 1024x768, but X uses the same percentage of CPU power on both (about 45%).

Have you tried a different audio output? (Preferences -> General -> Audio).
