enabling mpv prevents video playback

I just upgraded to SMPlayer v15.11 but I'm unable to figure out how to play back a YouTube video.
Having read the Oct 31 blog "How to play YouTube live streams with SMPlayer", I reinstalled SMPlayer 15.11 and selected mpv in the installer option tree. After reboot, I changed Options -> Preferences -> General from MPlayer.exe to mpv.exe, and verified that "Enable YouTube internal support" was checked @ Options -> Preferences -> Network. However, despite the blog title, there are no instructions on how to playback a live stream, just a sample YouTube URL. Hmm...
After further searching the site, I found the Nov 28 blog "Support for video sites (not only youtube)", which mentions entering the URL @ Open -> URL. Ok, fine. I tested the sample stream but I can only hear the audio. The player skin collapsed so there's no video frame. In fact, the same thing now happens when I try to play back any of my locally stored video files. I was able to restore video playback by reinstalling SMPlayer with MPlayer selected in the install options tree.
Although I'm fairly computer savvy, I know almost nothing about media players and terminology. For example, I just reviewed the MPV page (http://smplayer.sourceforge.net/mpv.php) and most of what's on that page might as well be Latin, so I apologize if I've missed something obvious.
BTW, the MPV page indicates that support for mpv is not available in the stable version. It says I need to get the current development version. I assume that information is now outdated, right? If so, should I post a separate thread about that in the Website & Forum section?
