When I try to change file associations the checkboxes are greyed out.

You'll need to change the file associations in the Windows control panel.

sorry reopening this old post.
I use smplayer over years, change file associations in windows xp works fine but after the update to Windows 7 i have the same problem over years.
Checkboxes in smplayer to change associations are all grey and the same grey checkboxes i find in the Windows settings.
The only way to change it is to use other tools or "Open with..".
