Unicode file names

Mplayer doesn't support Unicode file names / paths on Windows. Would it be possible to change smplayer so that is passes the short (8.3) version of the path to mplayer, so that it can open any file?

There's an option for that in preferences -> advanced.

Oh ... Why isn't it enabled by default? Does it have any drawbacks / does it cause problems? I'm asking to avoid any nasty surprises after enabling it.

Yes it has problems autoloading the subtitles, because with short names, the filename of the video and the filenames of subtitles may not match.
