Gnome-Panel Disappears After Exiting Fullscreen

I'm having an odd problem after upgrading SMPlayer to 16.6.0.
Everything seems to work fine, except fullscreen mode. On exiting fullscreen using the fullscreen toggle icon, the gnome-panel (both the top and bottom menu bars) are missing. This is repeatable and seems to happen nearly every time, with or without an actual video playing; there are no logs in either for either mpv or SMplayer when done without a video playing. When going back to fullscreen after gnome-panel disappears, the video is no longer displayed, merely a blank desktop.
Oddly, I have discovered that this can (usually) be fixed with going to fullscreen then exiting fullscreen via the Escape key (do the UI button and keypress use different code paths?). Sometimes, this doesn't work immediately, but repeated tries bring it back eventually.
I have no idea what could be causing this as gnome-panel itself seems blissfully unaware of anything going on; it doesn't crash or issue any error messages.
I'm using Ubuntu Xenial with the following PPAs for SMPlayer, mpv, and youtube-dl:

https://launchpad.net/~mc3man/+archive/ubuntu/mpv-tests
