Thank you for SMPlayer, challenger for VLC. Far easier to install from PPA.
Flawless .WAV and .MP4 playing for up to 1 hour, thereafter choppy audio.
On clicking STOP, a screenful of error messages (attached)
Platform: Linux Mint 17.3 Rosa with Cinnamon 2.8.8 x64

I can't reproduce the problem in my computer with mpv 0.18.1.

If mpv works fine for you but the problem is that it crashes when stop is pressed maybe you can work around the problem by unchecking the option "Report mplayer/mpv crashes" in Preferences -> Advanced -> mplayer/mpv.

Thank you, rvm, I did that. Now it doesn't give any errors when pressing stop.
