video lags behind audio digital TV

I've got a DVB dongle on Ubuntu 12.04 which I use with smplayer 16.11.0. Very often, the video lags behind and becomes out of synch with the audio. The sample rate is at 25 frame per second and my computer is quite old so I guess it can't keep pace. Would there be a possibility to cut down the rating sample both in input (I guess the input is dealt with by the driver when a frame is received and written in the cache) and output when read by mplayer so as to get more chance that the machine can cope. Thanks.

You can try the options "allow frame drop" and "allow hard frame drop" in preferences -> performance.

Thanks for this. But I upgraded to xubuntu 16.04 and now my dongle NOVA-T is no longer working...so I can't test your suggestion.
