As of this update, I now get:
Unknown option on the command line: --progbar-align
Error parsing option on the command line: -progbar-align
MPlayer2 2.0-701-gd4c5b7f-2ubuntu2 (C) 2000-2012 MPlayer Team
ID_EXIT=NONE
trying to play any video.
Running linux Mint 17.3. Worked fine until now, so I'm puzzled.

mplayer2 si obsolete and it doesn't have the progbar-align option.
Edit smplayer.ini, look for osd_bar_pos and set it to -1.

Thanks for the reply, appreciated.

However, mplayer 2 is apparently the latest version available for Mint 17.3 (aka ubuntu trusty), which I still use since it is LTS.

mplayer2 was a fork of mplayer but it's not developed anymore. I suggest to install mplayer or mpv instead.

Done, tested, seems fine. Thanks so much for the advice. :-)
