Firstly thanks to rvm for uploaded version 17.12.0.8872. I can see youtube videos again on smplayer.
Secondly, can I watch age restricted videos directly on smplayer? Is there a way to log in to ones youtube account through smplayer?

Unfortunately that got broken in the internal code some time ago due to changes in Youtube. You can still watch them if you select "mpv + youtube-dl" in preferences -> network, support for video sites.
