SMPlayer 0.8.5 still can't remember screen size

Postby brittney24 » Sun Jun 02, 2013 8:09 pm

May be a setting I haven't found, but for a long time, SMP doesn't remember minimized (last) screen sizes - for very long.

I don't have "start in full screen" checked - though tried it.
If manually resize a non maximized screen to ~ 1/4 of the monitor, close it & reopen - it'll remember that size (like most apps) for a SHORT time.

If then play a vid & maximize it (not "full screen," w/ hidden controls), then close SMP, it forgets the < max screen size next time it opens. After playing a vid, closing & reopening, it always opens at ~ 98% of max size. A bit of the control bar is usually hidden when it opens in "almost maximized" size & must click the Windows maximize UI button, so all controls are visible. Every time.

There's an smplayer.ini setting: save_window_size_on_exit=true, but it's not working or doesn't apply here.

It should be able to remember the partial screen size set by user - & does, until a vid is played - then forgets.
If not able to do that, then it should open fully maximized - not 98% - where some controls, time slider, etc., are hidden.

I only remember 1 other app that opened at almost maximized size. Apps usually retain last partial screen size or they open fully maximized (often have setting). That's not the same as opening "Full Screen," - which SMP seems to do, if that option's checked.
Can't we all just get along? If a computer crashes when no one's around, does it make a sound?

I know it may be asking a lot, but how difficult is it to create the dev builds in portable - either 32 or 64 bit? I try to use portables of everything when possible, to cut down on Vista's ever growing size & no problems w/ uninstalling.

Or, could I possibly extract a file(s) from the dev installer package & copy it to the current 0.8.5 portable folder?

For SMP - I've never even checked how much, if anything, installer versions writes to registry.

This zip contains the portable version, only the exe file. Copy it to the folder where you have the 0.8.5 files.

I would and more frequently but my only means of internet is 3G through my phone mobile hotspot, it's slow and expensive. 3 lines and a 20GB data plan, $300 a month. I have to pick and choose what and when to upload since I'm counting megabytes. I went over my data plan this month so that's an extra $15 per gigabyte.

Wow redxii,

Where are you or what company charges that much for 3G mobile service? Or do you mean 20 GB for all 3 lines?

Still, I thought for family plans, there were decent discounts. Maybe I'm wrong.

Is home internet service (dry loop DSL) not available & fairly cheap? In southern U.S., I only have 1 choice of providers for each of DSL, satellite, cable home internet.

I get 3.0 Mbps DSL w/ 150 GB limit for $19 US. It's normally much more, but each yr I call & threaten to drop them & use one of the other services w/ faster advertised speeds. I guess I have enough knowledge & sound convincing, because I get the bill reduced by 1/2 or more each yr. I have to spend 30 - 45 min rejecting their 1st & 2nd offers;

sticking to my talking points, that for a few $ more than their normal $ for 3 Mbps service (or often the other providers offer 1 yr promos for LESS than the slow DSL reg. $), I can get 4x or > the speed.
Eventually, they agree to cut it in 1/2 or more (which shows how much room they have to negotiate $). It's a considerable savings / yr, for 1 hr spent haggling.

rvm,
EDIT: the 1st part of this post is what happens when the setting in Interface > Main Window: "Remember position & size" is checked (default setting).
***************************************************************************
tried r5449 - replacing the smplayer.exe that came in 0.8.5 portable 32 bit package.

It seems to half solve the window size issue. When I very 1st started r5449, it was set at ~ 1/4 screen on a 1920x1080 monitor - fine.
Played a vid in the "default" 1/4 screen (did NOT maximize it); closed / reopened SMP - it remembered the 1/4 screen size.

If I fully maximize the screen (ONE time) while playing, then close / reopen - it opens in maximized screen each time. That's sorta OK, in some cases. (better than starting at 98% size). But I think most would prefer option to have it either open in 100% maximized size OR at a much reduced size - like 1/4 screen. Or at least, have it remember the 1/4 partial screen size, when click Windows screen size button.

BUT, after maximizing the screen once, if I need to get out of maximized screen (for any # of reasons), it goes back to NOT remembering the 1/4 screen size (or last minimized size - whether I set it or an internally set value) & ONLY remembers a partial screen size of ~ 98% of max screen.

As said, it solved 1/2 (or less) of the problem.

After the above, if I then manually resize the screen to ~ 1/4 of the monitor, close & reopen SMP - it remembers that partial screen size.
If I play a vid in that manually sized partial screen size ONLY, then close / reopen - it remembers the partial screen size I set.

But if I maximize a vid after that, it once again only remembers ~ 98% of max screen as the partial screen size.
Obviously, as it is now, there's no point or usefulness of having a partial screen size.
*********************************************************
2nd part of post is what happens when "Remember position & size" is NOT checked.

1) If uncheck that setting, SMP always starts in a default minimized size (< 1/4 of a 1920x1080 screen). I can maximize a vid & go back & forth to that preset partial size during play.
Whether I close SMP in the small partial screen size or maximized, it always restarts in the preset minimized size. (which is good - that it's not at 98% of max).

2) But, it doesn't remember a user set partial screen size, if they want it to open a bit bigger than the default partial screen size. This partial size could possibly be hacked in the config file.
Many apps remember custom set partial screen sizes, but this may be too hard to code in SMP - dunno.

3) If uncheck the "remember size & position" to avoid the defaulting to 98% partial screen size problem, SMP obviously won't remember if you drag the reduced window to another screen area, once restart it.

Obviously, part 1 scenario has more problems.

No further ideas?
Not an issue worth pursuing?
No time to look at the issue right now?
