I really think that a 'Check for SMPlayer updates' setting is needed in a GUI form.
It should look like this with a drop-down box (or 'Spinbox' as it is known in Qt interface terminology

Currently if I understand correctly a user has to locate the smplayer.ini and open it and look for [update_checker] section in smplayer.ini to configure the true/false variables in whether to enable it or disable it. So yes it already exists as an option under the hood.
Please RVM this is much needed, remember that not every user out there is a software pro or has the time to open up text based ini files....Windows users are very much GUI-fixated above all other OS users.
