YouTube videos fail to play when URL is entered manually

A couple of days ago a problem started where videos entered via Open >> URL (or CTRL+U) fail to play, and then the status line near the bottom of the window reads "Connecting to http://www.youtube.com" then is replaced by the title of the video.

Please help, and thanks in advance.

The problem this time is that Youtube now returns https URLs but mplayer doesn't support https streams

The workaround so far in smplayer is trying to find a way to get http URLs from Youtube, which for the moment can be done by using an empty user agent.

I've just read that mplayer can play https this way:
mplayer ffmpeg://https://...

But it requires a ffmpeg compiled with openssl support.

Unfortunately this doesn't work with the mplayer version in Ubuntu 12.04.

For me it's still working. Could you send the smplayer log (options -> view logs) after trying to play a youtube video?

I can't reproduce the problem.

According to the log it seems the Youtube page is not retrieved, but I don't know why.
