New user: cannot view some videos

Postby LateJunction » Mon Dec 29, 2014 11:51 am

Actually the 'some' is ALL YouTube videos, but there is already an open post on this topic (which hasn't so far suggested a solution to the problem with my installation) and I'm told it's bad practice to hitch a ride on somebody else's post.

I've just installed SMPlayer (version 0.8.6) using (I think) the package manager on my Linux distribution (Mint 17 XFCE).
SMTube is version 1.8, installed using a ppa I think
MPlayer is version 1.1 according to SMPlayer 'about', but according to my Package Manager it is Version 2:1.1+dfsg1-0ubuntu3

The problem is that SMTube starts OK, I can double click on any video but SMPlayer does nothing aside from telling me that Subtitles are on.

What should I be checking/changing in order to get the results I expect?

Please, send the smplayer log (options -> view logs).

But maybe the problem is that you're using an old version of smplayer. I'm not sure if version 0.8.6 can still play youtube videos.

Logs in attachments as requested

If my problem lies in not having the latest SMPlayer installed, where do I find an installable package?

I'm a user, not a programmer. Over the last 8 years I have tried about 20 times to compile from source; every attempt except 1 has failed because the developer made invalid assumptions about my configuration and/or failed to tell me about some other pre-requisite. I'm not going to frustrate myself by attempting a process which, in my experience, almost always leads to failure.

Thank you. After these changes videos load and "appear" to play - I say "appear" because, although I can hear audio, the viewport is completely black. On every YouTube video.

Mplayer log attached as requested. (Hmmm, file will not attach unless it has a filetype, as in DOS 8.3 naming !)

This morning, after a shut-down overnight, SMPlayer does not start unless I start SMTube first. This is not the designed behaviour, is it?

The video output you're using is not correct. Go to preferences -> general -> video and select another one (xv, gl, vdpau...).
